Shetland Sheepdog Dog Breeds

The Shetland is one of the smaller dogs on this list. It’s generally better known as a Sheltie, or to people who see one passing along on the street as a “mini-collie”. While a small dog, the Shetland Sheepdog has a strong history of being productive as a work dog. The Shetland Sheepdog was bred for herding smaller sheep, especially in rocky regions. The light Shetland Sheepdog would be able to simply leap from rock to rock like a graceful mountain goat.

The Shetland Sheepdog has some very distinctive features. It has what’s known as a double coat of fur. It has a rougher longer part that is mean as protection for the dog, while it has a soft lower layer. The outer layer is also water repellent shedding away the water that falls on them. The inner coat is used to regulate temperature and keep the dog warm. It’s similar to the hair on a polar bear. Unsurprisingly, they shed a lot of fur and are especially prolific at it in the spring and the fall. Shetland Sheepdogs rarely raise their tails. Like some breeds, they keep their tail low unless they are alerting their master to something potentially dangerous or that requires their attention.

Ownership Considerations

If you’re looking to get a Shetland Sheepdog for your family, they make excellent family dogs. They are intelligent and learn quickly. They are good with children and show patience. Sometimes they can be too loyal and hope to protect their family or owners from “intruders” so they will require early training to help acclimate them to strangers. The Shelties size makes them excellent dogs for apartments and condominium living as long as their owners are able to get them the exercise they need. Additionally, Shelties don’t have as many common health issues a lot of other breeds. Their most common problems are eye issues that can occur. It’s important to have their eyes checked at birth.
