Rottweiler Dog Breeds

The Rottweiler is one of the oldest contiguous breeds in the world. They have been herding for a long time and are often linked to ancient roman drover dogs. When the Romans pushed across Europe they had to herd fresh food along with them. To do that, they needed to bring their drover dogs. The drover dogs would herd the food while the armies did their thing.

Rottweilers themselves are heavily muscled working dogs. The breed was close to dying out of prominence in the late 1800’s, however as countries started their military buildup for WWI, the need for dogs to reinforce police and military saw the breed enter a resurgence.

Sometimes Rottweilers are greeted with some fear from people. Their German heritage and the fact they were used in World War 2 by Nazi Germany in a lot of facets gives them a history, and in modern times, the Rottweiler is a popular “junkyard dog” breed. These Rottweilers are not treated well so that if they see someone trespassing, they will attack. Despite that, the breed is actually a great breed for temperament and are devoted and loving.

Ownership Considerations

Rottweilers are big dogs, so you are going to need to make sure that there’s enough space for them. Rottweilers are naturally playful and goofy with their owners. They become very closely bonded. Sometimes Rottweilers become very attached to their owners and feel they need to defend them from strangers. Some simple social training at a young age will generally end these issues, with the Rottweiler being one of the most intelligent dog breeds, training comes easy to them.

Their strength and size does come at the cost of some standard big dog medical issues like hip dysplasia. However, for the most part, Rottweilers are actually pretty healthy dogs. Their diet needs to be commensurate to their exercise, otherwise, they can easily become obese and lose a lot of their energy and vigor.
