How You Can Help “Clear” the Animal Shelters in August
August doesn’t just mark the beginning of the end of summer; it is also the start of the fourth-annual Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption campaign.
NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ campaign will kick off on August 1 in more than 70 different markets across the U.S. This year, it has two national sponsors: Cat’s Pride and Hill’s Pet Nutrition. The highlight of the campaign, though, occurs on August 18, when hundreds of animal shelters and rescues will eliminate or reduce their adoption fees to encourage adoptions.
Millions of pets end up in shelters across the country each year. Despite the increase in shelter adoption rates in the past few years, approximately 1.5 million animals (860,000 cats and 670,000 dogs) are euthanized annually because of overcrowding.
By promoting pet adoptions, the Clear the Shelters initiative aims to reduce the number of euthanized animals. Since its inception in 2015, the campaign has helped 153,651 pets at shelters find homes with loving families.
“Every single pet that is adopted frees shelter staff up to work with and prepare the next pet for potential adoption,” said Kenny Lamberti, director of strategic engagement and companion animals for the Humane Society of the United States.
Retailers can also get involved in helping shelter pets find forever homes by participating in and promoting the campaign. Consider teaming up with a participating shelter in your area to host an adoption event; hang up signage in your store with adoption and shelter statistics; or, simply share information about the initiative on your social media pages.
