The German Shepherd Dog is renowned for being loyal and protective. This type of dog breed is also extremely loyal and shows nothing but the utmost devotion to those it loves. It is usually brown, black, white, or a combination of these colors. German Shepherd dogs are medium to large sized dogs. They are muscular and athletic, with a sharp scissor bite. German Shepherds are 22 to 26 inches in height and weigh between 60 to 90 pounds. German Shepherds are an extremely popular dog throughout America because they are intelligent, easy to train and faithful.


German Shepherd dogs have a great personality that is loving and protective. They are also very strong and easy to train which is why they have been used for many different jobs, including as service dogs, police K-9s, guard dogs, search and rescue dogs, farm dogs and more. They are extremely loyal and protective of their owners and families German Shepherd dogs may bark when strangers or other dogs are near if they are not trained not to do so. They are a great addition to any family that is willing to put in the time and effort necessary to have a trained companion.


German Shepherds have a double coat that insulates them from rain, snow, and ice. They may have medium or long fur. German Shepherds are heavy shedders, especially when they blow their coat twice a year. A German Shepherd should be brushed a few times a week, or daily during periods of intense shedding. It is important to only bathe a German Shepherd when it needs it because otherwise its beautiful coat will be stripped of its essential oils. They should have their ears cleaned weekly and their nails trimmed if they need it.


German Shepherds are a working breed and want to please their owners. German Shepherd dogs should undergo training at an early age so that they will do well in social situations. They should be trained with an experienced trainer who can provide dominance and consistency.  Early training will allow the German Shepherd to live peacefully around children, dogs, cats and other commotions. They are good family pets and guard dogs.

Daily Activity

German Shepherds need daily mental and physical exercise. They have a confident demeanor and are generally quite composed. They love to go for structured walks, playing games of fetch, and swimming. German Shepherds enjoy playing with their owners and can be trained to herd animals on farms.


German Shepherd dogs generally live between 10 and 13 years. The breed is quite healthy but may have a few health concerns which include: bloat, cataracts, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, Cushing’s disease, mitral dysplasia and more.

German Shepherds are a breed that is loyal and devoted. They like to be active and enjoy swimming, hiking and running. They are a wonderful dog for those who have time and energy to spend with them daily.
