They are known for their beautiful mane around their neck and shoulders. Their coat comes in many different color variations including tan, black, fawn, brindle and white. Pekingese dogs are very loving but are not afraid to set limits when it comes to what they like or don’t like.
Pekingese dogs are a breed that loves attention. They are possessive of not only their food and toys but their families as well. Although they are small, they are also nippy, which can become a problem for families- especially ones with small children. Pekingese dogs may bark when left alone for long periods of time, so it is not a breed recommended for someone who is away from their home for long stretches of time. The Pekingese small dog that can easily become a loyal and loving family member.
The Pekingese breed requires a lot of grooming and maintenance to keep it healthy and looking its best. It has a double coat that is prone to matting and tangles. They are said to resemble a lion because of the mane around its neck and the feathering on the back of its legs. They should be bathed every couple weeks and their ears should be cleaned weekly. Pekingese dogs generally do not like having their teeth or feet touched, so it is important to get them used to nail trims and teeth brushed early on.
Pekingese dogs are stubborn and may act as though they rule the roost. Training a Pekingese dog requires commitment, patience, and leadership. The owner must establish the position of top dog in the house, or the Pekingese will gladly assume this position themselves. Pekingese dogs are highly food motivated, making treats a good training resource.
Pekingese dogs do not require very much exercise and can live in a small space comfortably. They love to take walks around the block but do not require very long distances to get the exercise that they need. They love to get comfy on the couch and will have spurts of energy throughout the day.
Pekingese dogs live to be about 10 to 12 years old. The breed faces some health concerns due to their short muzzle which includes eye problems and breathing issues. There are some health concerns with the breed including perineal hernia, brachycephalic upper airway syndrome, proptosis, ulcerative keratitis, odontoid process dysplasia and more.
Pekingese dogs are not only simply adorable, they are smart and loyal. This tiny pooch has lots of love to give.
